The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is an autonomous national institute under the Government of India’s Ministry for Science & Technology, Department of Biotechnology. RGCB’s primary focus is on discovery, innovation, and translation in the fields of biotechnology and disease biology. Introduction to Junior Research Fellow Position
RGCB is currently inviting applications for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for a research project funded by the DST SERB. The project, titled “Engineered alpha-helical pores for single-molecule sensing of amyloid structures,” will be carried out in the Laboratory of Dr. Mahendran K R at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, located in Thiruvananthapuram.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates applying for the Junior Research Fellow position must possess a post-graduate degree with a minimum of 70% marks in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biotechnology from a recognized university. Additionally, candidates who have qualified the National Eligibility Test – CSIR-UGC NET (including Lectureship) or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), or any other national-level examination conducted by Central Government Departments and their Agencies and Institutions, such as the DBT-Biotechnology Eligibility Test, JBEEBILS, ICMR Entrance Exam, or approved DST Inspire Fellowship, are eligible to apply. Prior experience of at least one year in protein engineering and purification is also required.
Age and Emoluments
The maximum age limit for the Junior Research Fellow position is 32 years as of June 15, 2023. Age relaxation will be provided as per the norms set by the Government of India. The selected candidate will receive an emolument of Rs. 31,000/- per month along with a 16% House Rent Allowance (HRA).
Duration and Selection Process
The initial appointment for the Junior Research Fellow position will be for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year or until the project’s termination, subject to performance evaluation on a yearly basis.
The selection process for the JRF position involves the following steps:

- If a candidate wishes to apply for multiple positions, separate applications should be submitted for each position. However, selection for one position does not guarantee consideration for future positions at RGCB.

Only candidates who meet the specified criteria will be shortlisted for an online selection interview. The selection will be based on the candidates’ qualifications and their performance in the interview.
